Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter...the media is full of articles and information about the various social and professional networks. What do we use them for, how do we use them and what information do we put out there? It can become both confusing and overwhelming!

Thank you for a wonderful year. We've accomplished a lot in the AIPBW, and it's only through your passion and volunteerism that we've made these things possible. As we welcome 2012, we want to be sure to first thank the members of the 2011 board who are stepping down:

November

Several of my Norwegian friends have confided that November was their "darkest" month of the year, just before the Christmas lights and preparations, the sparkling snow and the ski season.

Spring –– though maybe not in Oslo –– is a season of renewal: New life, new weather, new energy. In the AIPBW, we're taking on new projects and partnerships to help bring more benefits to our members.
As some of you have read, we're following the EPWN's lead with an Oslo–based mentoring program. We've received lots of positive feedback from members interested in serving as mentors or mentees. The registration deadline has now passed. But if this is something you really, truly, surely feel that you must do, let us know, and we will do our best to be accomodating.

You were represented by Nathalie Owe and myself at EPWN's first pan–European celebration event in Madrid, gathering over 200 international, cross–industry women, leaders and stakeholders. Nathalie and I listened to top–quality speakers, heard about new opportunities for women in Europe and in the world and, not least, learned tremendously from the amazing women working in our 17 sister networks across Europe.

We want to thank you for a great year. Our group is thriving, and it wouldn't be possible to accomplish what we do without your help. We wish to all a joyous, safe and relaxing holiday.
We're excited about our plans for next year, when we want to focus even more on our members and growing our numbers. Spread the word! If you know someone in your network who is looking to grow professionally, invite her to visit. We encourage you to also keep active in our dialogues, both in the new EPWN site and on our site. Contact us with your ideas and comments. Our ears are open.
When we return in January, we'll have a few new faces. On top of a new marketing and public relations board member and a new members board member, we are still seeking a Web and IT board member who can help us maximize our new Web platform. Anyone interested in volunteering for this position should see the information later in the newsletter.

What a month! The AIPBW board has been busy attending conferences and making plans for next year. We're seeking a Web and IT manager to help us with our everyday online projects, as well as creating and accomplishing our online strategies. Interested? As our activities are moving more indoors, some international groups have taken advantage of the extra time for work. In the past week alone, two major studies have been published about women in business.
The European Professional Women's Network released their fourth bi–annual EuropeanPWN BoardWomen Monitor 2010. It's a study on board gender and diversity issues across Europe. On a larger scale, we also saw the results of the WOMENOMICS 101 survey examining gender at global companies. You'll hear more about each in this issue
This month's newsletter looks ahead to some upcoming events such as AIPBW's October activities, Oslo Chamber of Commerce's Summit on Peace Through Trade and the Board Impact Conference.

Two years ago, Jennifer Varino handed over the Internal Communications position to me and this year it is my turn. What I have loved about this process is the opportunity I've had to tell our members' stories. Thank you to all of you who have honoured me with your time and allowed me to share the more personal part of your lives. The wealth of stories, achievements and talent at AIPBW is truly inspiring.
I'm excited and encouraged about our new Internal Communications person, Meera Bhatia. As an established journalist, Meera will no doubt be a strong voice for AIPBW. With this, I now pass on the pen!

December

December is a month marked with celebrations, gift giving and receiving, spending time with family and finishing up items on your work list. December can also be a time where we close one chapter in our life and prepare to begin a new one

Attention to the issue of women on boards has been increasing in the media and is often a topic of conversation at AIPBW meetings. Many women here still feel that, while the official figures say that women in Norway represent 40% of many boards in reality, this increase isn't visible. We have heard the arguments put forth in the media that there are not enough qualified women for board positions. Well, to that I say it is never too late to prove the critics wrong.

For the last few months, I have had the pleasure of experiencing many changes to both my career and personal life. None that I expected to happen as suddenly as they did, and like most unexpected changes they looked more scary than inviting at first. However, being the ever optimist, I know that life is full of hidden treasures waiting to be found. One of the most significant treasures I have found has been in the form of being a part of a women's network.

Going green, the war on terror, globalism, social networking and the financial crisis are all terms that define the 21st century thus far. But not to be forgotten is one major issue that has occasionally made headlines: gender balance in boardrooms and leadership.
June

I have long been a fan of the infamous moose stories published on Aftenposten's online service "News in English", and like many others, I was saddened to learn that the service was being closed down. "What a loss" I thought. I missed the wit and humour of many of the articles, and not to mention, it had served as my main source of local news back in the days when the extent of my Norwegian was non–existent.

Strong women are inspiring women. They are women we read about in news and magazine articles; see on TV or via the Internet. We vote for them, award them peace prizes and other prizes of public recognition. We listen to them talk at seminars and conferences. Some of us have them as bosses and others, as colleagues. Most of us perhaps know them best as just “mom”.
April

If you were to write a script of your life with the knowledge that what you wrote would be realised, how would it read? Where would you be living and working? How would you spend your time and with whom would you keep company? Most importantly, how would this story compare to your present situation?
March

What inspires you, great designs, home cooked meals, friends and family, a well written report? For some, inspiration is part of their everyday. They find inspiration in people, places and things that most of us overlook. For others, finding inspiration is not as easy

For some people home is where the heart is, for others, it is where they lay their hat, but for those of us who have lived a more nomadic lifestyle; home is much more than a feeling or a place. Home–is an experience.
